A Spring of Hope
Mission Statement

A Spring of Hope is a non-profit 501(c)(3) public foundation that builds water wells in rural African schools to improve community health conditions and to promote education at a grassroots level. A Spring of Hope's mission and goal is to invest in the sustainable futures of impoverished rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the UN, 2.6 billion people across the world do not have access to basic sanitation, and 1.1 billion people lack access to clean drinking water. The world water crisis is one of the main causes of poverty and poor health in developing countries.

To battle both water scarcity and extreme poverty, A Spring of Hope drills water wells in rural schools, where large numbers of children and their respective families can benefit. Clean water at a school in an impoverished area is inviting to students, especially to the majority who face adversity at home. Water brings improved sanitation at schools and healthier students.

Water is so vital to school attendance that it is estimated that 443 million school days a year are missed due to water-related illness.

Women suffer the most from the world water crisis. It is estimated that about half the girls in Sub-Saharan Africa who drop out of primary school do so because of water scarcity at school. Without education, women remain mired in a cycle of poverty often with large, uneducated, and unhealthy families. (UN Human Development Report 2006)

In Sub-Saharan Africa, water scarcity even limits productivity as 40 billion hours a year are spent collecting water from distant sources. Much of this labor falls on women. (UN Human Development Report 2006)

A Spring of Hope's goal is to make its projects as sustainable as possible. After each well is constructed, A Spring of Hope and/or a partner organization personally provides gardening instruction. Gardens provide food for the students and faculty and a steady flow of income to purchase necessary school supplies. With the help of a garden, schools can improve infrastructure, attract more students, and encourage education at a grassroots level.

A Spring of Hope's goal is to provide schools with the necessary tools to be independent from future aid. The foundation is working to see schools become vibrant community centers, essential sources of food, and revered places of learning and promising futures.

100% of proceeds benefit disadvantaged African students.

"One thing a visitor to Africa may notice about its people is their spiritual wealth. Africa is constantly bombarded with struggles related to war, social strife, poverty, and economic instability. However, Africa's population possesses a happiness and positive outlook towards life most peoples of other continents could never understand. I can only imagine what Africa could accomplish if it was not enduring those hardships. With such exuberant and resilient people, how successful could this continent become if it obtained the help it so desperately needs?

In today's rapidly transforming technological world, distant countries are becoming next-door neighbors. The world is becoming less of a system of divided countries, and more of a unified planet. With this in mind, I feel that it is my responsibility as a human being to utilize every advantage I have to assist those who are less fortunate...whether they be within my country, or on the other side of the world. Africa's children are Africa's future. Education is the gateway out of poverty, and if I can help even one child in Africa succeed and make a difference, then I feel I have lived up to my purpose."
